Australia is set to swell by an estimated 600,000 households over the next five years, with nearly three quarters of the growth to occur in the major cities, according to a forecast report by Pitney Bowes Business Insight.

The report says by 2015 there will be 8.7 million households in Australia (7.1 million of which were counted in the 2006 Census), with 72.4 per cent of the overall growth to occur in the main cities.

Queensland will remain the dominant growth state in Australia, with more than twice the number of suburbs than any other state or territory in the top 100 list.

“By 2015 Australian households will have increased to a point where, as a nation, we will have outgrown many of our existing facilities,” says Bob Schwartz, Pitney Bowes Business Insight chief economist.

“There will be greatly increased demand for jobs, infrastructure, hospitals, and schools to support this increase.”

Pitney Bowes Business Insight predicts that the outer western suburbs of Brisbane will be the fastest growing area in the country, with eastern Ipswich the fastest growing suburb. It will add nearly 7,500 households to its current 22,400.

The top three fastest growing suburbs are:
1. Ipswich (Qld)
2. Whittlesea North (Vic)
3. Wanneroo (WA)

Camden, in Sydney’s outer southwest, is projected to be the fastest growing area in New South Wales and is forecast to be the sixth fastest growth suburb overall.

South Australia is the only state where the growth rate in non-metropolitan households will exceed that of key metropolitan regions.

Pitney Bowes Business Insight also predicts that the current trend of increasing average household size will continue for the foreseeable future.

“One reason is that new immigrants such as students, family members and some skilled workers live in high-density shared accommodation or simply move into existing households. Another is that the high cost of purchasing a new house is resulting in ’20-somethings’ staying at home longer or moving into shared accommodation,” Schwartz says.
